SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In a fiercely contested matchup in the JMA Wireless Dome, Virginia Tech fell short in overtime, losing 38-31 to Syracuse despite demonstrating resilience throughout the game.

The Hokies struck early, scoring two touchdowns in the first half. Wide receiver Jaylin Lane opened the scoring with a 7-yard rush, followed by quarterback Colin Schlee’s 1-yard push into the end zone. Both touchdowns were set up by impressive completions to wide receiver Stephen Gosnell, who delivered two receptions over 40 yards, finishing the half with 99 yards.

Defensively, Virginia Tech was formidable, keeping the Orange out of the end zone in the first half and allowing only a lone field goal. Cornerback Mansoor Delane was a standout performer, registering an interception and forcing a fumble that linebacker Jaden Keller recovered, further solidifying the Hokies’ defensive.

The momentum continued into the second half as Virginia Tech opened with a drive that culminated in a 12-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Ali Jennings.

Entering the fourth quarter, the matchup intensified as Syracuse found the end zone, taking a brief lead. However, defensive lineman Antwaun Powell-Ryland made a critical play by blocking the extra point, which was recovered by Jaylen Jones, allowing Virginia Tech to stay within striking distance.

Riding the momentum from the defensive stand, running back Malachi Thomas powered in with a 15-yard rush for the Hokies’ fourth touchdown, reclaiming the lead.

Powell-Ryland continued to make his mark on the game, recording his 12th sack of the season and forcing an 11-yard loss just before Syracuse tied the game, sending it into overtime.

Despite missing key starters on the offensive line, Schlee managed to generate 206 passing yards and 54 rushing yards, supported by a strong showing from running backs Jeremiah Coney and Malachi Thomas, who combined for 169 rushing yards. Gosnell finished with a career-high 118 receiving yards, showcasing the Hokies’ grit in a tough loss.
