Third quarter spurt propels No. 3 Irish past Hokies Thursday night

Baker notches first double-double in ACC play

BLACKSBURG – Hannah Hidalgo and No. 3 Notre Dame manufactured a 12-3 run to begin the third quarter and build a double digit lead on the Hokies that they would not relinquish. In the end, the Irish earned a 77-61 victory on Carilion Clinic Court Thursday evening.

Tech, who held a lead after the first quarter and trailed by just four at halftime fell to 14-7 on the season and 5-5 in conference play. Notre Dame is 18-2 (9-0).

Sophomore Carys Baker led the Hokies’ attack, notching her first career double-doube in ACC play with 17 points and 11 rebounds, which is a career best. She was joined in double figures by Matilda Ekh who had 13 and Rose Micheaux who finished the game with 10.

The Hokies came out firing in the first quarter going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. From that point, the team was just 1-for-9 from distance.

For Notre Dame, point guard Hidalgo was stellar scoring 30 points on 10-16 shooting.
