PEARISBURG – Playing on a beautiful Friday night the Giles Spartans scored early as they rolled past their county rivals Narrows Green Wave, 38-8 in front of packed grandstands for both teams.

Spartans running back Jalen Miller scored three touchdowns in the first half as he scored on runs of 1, 8 and 12 yards. He barely played the second half as he finished with 13 rushes for 91 yards. He also threw for two two-point conversions.

Antonio Wilcoxson scored one touchdown and rushed for 50 yards on 12 carries.

Giles scored with 7:45 of the first quarter with Miller scoring from one yard out. He then threw a two-point pass to Brady Thwaites for the 8-0 lead. Miller would tally again with 1:05 left in the first taking a pitchout around right end as he made it 14-0. Wilcoxson ran the two-point conversion for a 16-0 Spartans advantage.

They would stretch their lead to 22-0 with just 35 seconds before intermission with Miller once again scoring, this time from eight yards out. Miller then threw a two-point pass to Mason Myers to up the score to 24-0 going into halftime.

The Spartan’s defense had limited the Green Wave to just 53 total yards at intermission.

Giles would get on the scoreboard with 4:54 left in the third quarter with Wilcoxson ramming his way into the endzone from six yards out. Will Tickle’s point after kick put them up 31-0. They would make it 38-0 as Michael Wilson scored from the three yard line and Tickle’s kick.

Narrows would finally avoid the shutout with Cooper Helvey scoring on a five-yard touchdown run with 2:50 left in the game. QB Parker Bryan would run the two-point conversion for a 38-8 score.

Narrows (1-3) head coach Kelly Lowe said, “We got down early and we were on our heels the entire game. We’re banged up some, but I take my hat off to Coach (Sam) Wright and the Spartans. This was Parker Bryan’s first start at quarterback.”  He then said, “Their line play was the difference.”

Narrows running back Cooper Helvey had 128 yards on 23 carries.

Giles head coach Sam Wright said, “Our offensive and defensive lines played well and that’s our strength. This team is hungry and all week long in practices the guys were dialed in. I know their team has some injuries, but I could see tonight our guys were ready.”

The Spartans saw their record improve to 3-1, winning their third straight game. They had 10 different players carry the ball. They will travel to Tazewell next week, while Narrows will host James Monroe (WV) Friday, Sept. 26.
