Chance Harman Classic: Short-handed Pioneers fall to Patrick County

Playing in last weekend’s Chance Harman Classic being held at Floyd County High School, the Patrick County Cougars defeated the Fort Chiswell Pioneers 53-49 in the opening game of the Classic.

Fort Chiswell was playing without their leading scorer Owen Jackson and part-time starter Stan Petrunyak due to injuries. Patrick County got a game-high 25 points from Jayden Corns and Brayden Hylton tossed in eight points.

The Pioneers (5-5) had only Landon Eversole to score in double figures with 11 points. Kenton Sutphin scored nine in the losing effort.

The game was close throughout with the Pioneers leading 14-11 after the first quarter, but found themselves down 26-25 at intermission.  Corns was scoring from down low for Patrick County as he had 14 of their 26 points in the first half.

Patrick County took a 39-37 lead into the final quarter and would outscore Fort Chiswell 14-12 to pull out the win.

Other Chance Harman Classic action saw Christiansburg blitz the Radford Bobcats, 74-45. The Blue Demons lead from tipoff to the final buzzer. They were led by Mason King with 14, Walker Overbay’s 12  and Peyton Haile’s 11 points. Radford got 12 points from Colten Garner-Rollins.

The Blue Demons hit 11 threes as they took command early in the game leading 21-9 in the first quarter and stretched that advantage as the game continued.

Spotswood hammered Blacksburg 81-52 with Spotswood placing four players in double digit scoring. Noah Bradshaw tossed in 16 points, Landon Davis 14, Colin Regan 13, and Trenton Blosser scoring 10. Regan and Blosser both came off the bench for their scoring. The Bruins of Blacksburg Josh Byun scored 16 points as he scored nine of his points in the first half.

Cave Spring, after a slow start rolled over the Auburn Eagles 62-28. The Knights were paced by Shawn Turner’s 18 points and 13 from Ethan Jones. Auburn got 12 points from Cody Fleet and 11 from Brody Hensel. Cave Spring outscored Auburn 40-17 combined in the second and decisive third quarters.

The nightcap game saw the Graham G-men down the Glenvar Highlanders 76-56. Graham had eight players in the scoring column. Channing Disibbio led their attack with 23 points. Ty Martin had 22 points and Gage Palmer tossed in 12 for the win. Glenvar hit nine three’s but it wasn’t enough. Jax Bolling came off the Highlander bench to score 21 points. Ryder Francisco scored 11 as the game was close at intermission at 33-31 Graham. The second half saw the G-men out score the Highlanders 43-25.
