What starts out good doesn’t always end up that way. Such was the Glenvar vs. Strasburg game for the Class 2 State Championship.

Glenvar recovered two fumbles in the first quarter that propelled them to two touchdowns for a 12-0 lead.

Strasburg would settle down and would run around and over the Highlanders for a 49-27 victory.

The Rams (13-1) scored three times in the second quarter to take a 21-19 lead into intermission. They would then outscore Glenvar (14-1) 28-8 in the second half.

The Rams had three running backs that rushed for two touchdowns apiece and all rushed for over 100 yards in their full house backfield offense. Quincy Williams had 19 carries for 132 yards, Linkyn Bosworth had 122 yards on 18 rushes, and Brady Knight 16 carries for 104 yards.

Glenvar’s QB Brody Dawyot had 16 rushes for 92 yards and scored twice. He also threw for  two touchdowns  and 244 yards, but was intercepted twice.

The Highlanders scored with 3:37 in the opening quarter as Dawyot scored  on a two-yard plunge.   Then after recovering a fumble they would tally this time with just 28 seconds left as Dawyot hit Cooper Mullins for a 23-yard touchdown pass. Their point after kick was blocked on the first score and they tried to pass for a two-point conversion on the second score, but it was over thrown in the endzone.

Strasburg would get on the scoreboard at the 9:11 mark of the second quarter as Knight scored on an eight -yard run. Pablo Mora Hernandez’s kick made it 12-7.

They would then score with 3:57 before halftime as Williams scored  on a six-yard run for a 14-12 Rams lead.

The Rams would then intercept Dawyot and Bosworth scored on a 10-yard off tackle run, 21-12. That made it two touchdowns in just one minute and five seconds.

Glenvar would answer on a four-yard run and Zane Smith’s kick had the score 21-19 going into intermission.

The Rams would score on a five -yard Knight run, 23-yard Bosworth run and finally Willams broke loose for a 55-yard scamper to go up 42-19.

Glenvar would score their lone second half score with 48 seconds left in the third as Brody Dawyot hit Tre Dawyot for an eight-yard pass as the score was 42-27 going into the final quarter.

The only score in the final period came as the Rams scored with 3:35 remaining as QB Brayden Hough sneaked in from two-yards.

Glenvar head coach Kevin Clifford said, “Obviously they wore us down a little bit. In games like this you have to play mistake free and we didn’t. Congrats to them.”

Strasburg head coach Tripp Lamb remarked, “I tell our guys all the time the toughest team we play is ourselves. We beat ourselves sometimes. Coming into this game we were going to ride those big boys up front and try to wear them down. That’s been our strength all year.”

The Rams won their first state title in their sixth try. They finished with 370 yards rushing on 55 rushes.
